Surround over S/PDIF not working: cannot turn off audio mode

I set up my Creative X-Fi and it plays back sound correctly. However I cannot manage to make it output digital audio over S/PDIF directly to my external decoder.

If I run "mplayer -ao alsa:device=iec958 -ac hwac3 <filename>", all I get is screeching noise. I also know the reason for this: running iecset, I can clearly see from "Data: audio" that audio mode wasn't properly turned off. However, running "iecset audio 0" doesn't disable audio mode, no matter if I run it with sudo or not. Can anyone help me out with this please?
