Hi there,
Just upgraded GTK2 from 2.6.0 to 2.6.1-1, and GNOME doesn't seem to like it. Icons such as the GNOME "foot" (the Menu button) can't be loaded (red X icon), some applications such as gedit start but can't be closed, others, most of all the GNOME system tools, don't start at all. The error message found in the console points towards a compatibility issue with GTK. Sorry, I haven't jotted it down, I was more concerned about getting my work machine running again. The problem persists if I add a new user with a fresh GNOME installation.
Anybody else experiencing this problem? Or is my installation done in? I switched back to 2.6.0 for now, everything back to normal ...

I also had a similar problem. Nautilus would crash, the panel would load (without my applets) but not respond. The Show Desktop Button icon was missing, and the Workspace Switcher was not dimensioned correctly.
I saw only one error message on the console, and it was from glic saying that a doubly-linked list was corrupt.
The problem was in all my user accounts.
I'm pretty sure that I did the upgrade from an xterm while running Gnome. Is this a bad idea?
I also reverted back to 2.6.0-1 and was fine.

Same problem here. Only I can't revert to 2.6.0, because I cleaned out /var/cache/pacman :-(
Somebody please fix this, my Gnome is totally unusable.
Thanks!

Yes, it is amazing. And it is not just that Gnome no longer runs -- almost
anything using Gtk+ might suddenly crash. Xfce4-rc3, for example,
just shuts down.
Here is a sample of the error messages:
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x081a4b30 ***
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x0812e620 ***
*** glibc detected *** corrupted double-linked list: 0x081e4968 **
always something to do with "double".
At www.gtk.org it is described as just a simple bug fix with backward
compatibility to 2.6.0.

xfce4-rc3 works fine for me, except gnome apps.
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?

2.6.0 breaks gnome for me as well.
alexthelion all packages builds are in cvs for the packages, 2.6.0 PKGBUILD

What versions of other packages are you using (xorg and such)? I've heard of problems. My issues comes from using Xorg 6.7 for use with the closed source ATI drivers. The new gtk seems to depend on Xorg 6.8+.
Offline
xorg 6.8.1
From the official release announcement:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-an … 00009.html
This is a bug fix release and is source and binary compatible with 2.6.0.
So I don't know what is up with this problem. But reverting back to 2.6.0 definitely solves it.

Me too. Rebuilding 2.6.0 from source doesn't seem to fix it. Something changed (probably a lib update) in the process of building gtk since the last release.

for me gnome won't start, and my xfce4-panel crashes. Where is the package manager and what does he have to say about this?

m... didn't understand what you meant. I'll try rebuilding 2.6.0 again.

you sound like you're out for blood
seriously, i'm sure the package manager has a life like the rest of us (er...some, anyways) and will fix it just as soon as he figures it out ![]()
I'm also having this issue, btw, so i'm using e17-cvs for now...

Maybe when you build gtk2 2.6.0 you have to build the matching
glib2 2.6.0 package also.
I built glib2 first, tried it out, then built gtk2. So I'm not sure.

Dorphell mantains like half of the packages in the repos. It's a lot of work.

It's an archlinux bug. The patch to add $XDG_DATA_DIRS/pixmap to the icon search was modified to reflect some changes in gtk 2.6.1.
Unofrtunately, the modifications to the memory reservations for the added searchpath weren't patched in, so a buffer overflow occurs.

Perfect, it solved my problem for the launch of evolution-2.0, which consistently didn't want to start after gtk2-2.6.1-1 upgrade.
Thank you very much to you, you saved my day.

ah I see. I wasen't pointing any fingers just that I was thinking that the package manager usually comments on an issue. Anyhow I'm going to try that package ^ and see if that fixes the issue.
Sorry for the misunderstanding

I am curious as to why the original source code is being patched this way.
Is it to accomodate multiple icon directories in /opt?

Just as a bit of info: gtk2-2.6.1-2 apparently has been checked in the repositories. Upgraded, no problems what so ever. Works like a charm
Thanks to whoever made this possible!

Likewise here.
Just upgraded via pacman and nautilus crashed. On reboot Nautilus fails to start, Gnome panel starts but no icons.
I am going to downgrade and see if that fixes it

I've installed glib2 2.6.1-3 and gtk2 2.6.1-4, but it still doesn't work. Nautilus seems to work, but the panel and other gnome applications like the gnome-terminal or gedit, etc. don't.
