Creative X-Fi + OSSv4 -> no device

Hi there,
I have a creative x-fi titanium which works quite fine with alsa. But I'm not completly satisfied, e.g. I can't controll subwoofer volume at all. 5.1 only works via asoundrc.
I read the wikipage and some positive opinions of users about OSS(v4), and want to give it a try. Of course I can't yet say if I will stick to it. I want to test it.

Well thats what I did: disabled all ALSA stuff (no snd* modules loaded anymore). Nearly all devices disappeared from the KDE SC 4.4 multimedia section.
oss is successfully loaded in rc.conf, modules are working (osscore, oss_usb, oss_sbxfi).
KDE's Multimedia sections lists "OSS default output" (first place), "ALSA default output", "Jack Audio Connection Kit" and "Esound (ESD)".

Thats does not sound too bad, does it? Look at this:

The x-fi is recognized somehow, but there is not a single device.
I have no idea why... I did what all wikis I found told me to do. Basicly just run oss. hmm

I appreciate any help... Thanks

Re: Creative X-Fi + OSSv4 -> no device

What happens when you try osstest and have you checked with ossxmix that the correct channels are active and unmuted?

Re: Creative X-Fi + OSSv4 -> no device

osstest

osstest
Sound subsystem and version: OSS 4.2 (b 2002/200912291752) (0x00040100)
Platform: Linux/x86_64 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 9 15:12:10 CET 2010

NOTICE! You don't have any audio devices available.
        It looks like your audio hardware was not recognized
        by OSS.

        If you have installed OSS just a moment ago then it may be necessary to.
        to rebot the system before trying to use the device(s).

ossxmix

No mixers are available

Sorry for not posting instantly - tested those commands before.

Edit:
Starting the daemon works fine, but when I try "soundon" this is the output:

sudo soundon
/usr/sbin/soundon: Line 174: 14020 Killed              /sbin/modprobe $n $OPTIONS
Loading module oss_sbxfi failed - ignored

This maybe not 100% exact - I had to retype it because the PC crashed instantly after it showed up this message.
Its strange because "lsmod" definitly lists the module.

Re: Creative X-Fi + OSSv4 -> no device

*Push*

I wanted to switch back to ALSA for having some sound until oss works.
Guess what... ALSA does not find any Soundcard either now. So atm I have no sound at all.
Of course I installed and configured ALSA the way I did after first install. Back then the Card was recognized at once. I did not delete any files. Only thing I did was deactivating / activating modules and daemons.
Maybe thats the same problem after all? Probably something went wrong when first experimenting with OSS, so now neither of them works anymore.

Any hints how to "reset" soundconfigs somehow? To get the status of a new install, before alsa or oss were ever installed.

Edit:
Of course the soundcard is not damaged. Its still found with lspci, and with windows it works.

Edit2: Obviously alsa does not work anymore because of an udev update: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=91104
What a relief... wink

Alsa works again - ok. But I still want to compare it to oss someday.
And until now it did not recognize any device. Would be great if someone had an idea. smile
