[SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

so i recently just installed arch 32 bit fresh.  everything seems to work great but when i tried burning a cd with graveman, it could not be done because it doesnt see the blank disc.

i thought it was something wrong with graveman because when i insert the disc it shows up on the desktop as there.  But when i tried to use an alternate program(brasero) it did the same thing as graveman.  Why cant these programs see the disc?

Maybe its a permissions issue...? Try running them from terminal as either root or with temporary root privs using sudo

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

I think graveman started not detecting cdrom drives correctly when cdrkit came out.
I use cdrtools from aur with graveman and it works fine.

/edit never used brasero but seems like that would work with cdrkit.

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

i gave permissions to optical.  ill see about cdrtools and get back to you

it seems that cdrtools is already installed as the latest version.  should i install an earlier version?

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

If you try and install cdrtools via pacman or some of the alt programs like bauerbill, it will default to installing cdrkit.  So make sure you're installing the package from the AUR.

However, I'm not sure if that is your problem.  I actually have the same trouble with Brasero, Recorder, and Graveman, at least, on my laptop.  Never been able to figure out what's wrong, but gnome-baker and k3b both work fine for me.

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

graveman digged his own grave. the last news are from 2006! i'd recommend to try something else, e.g. recorder, xfburn or even brasero.

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

The device location should be /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd.  doesn't matter which location you choose to give it. they are actually identical.  but I know graveman autodetection fails to give it the proper location at least.  Though it leads you to believe it did a perfect job by naming the manufacturer of your device.   This could be some sort of configuration bug, ei: an additional system configuration needed to avoid the "problem".  I never chased it down because it's so easy to change the device location to /dev/cdrom.  You just delete the entry, and add a new proper one.  All that really matters is the location.  The device name affects nothing.

+1  I recently installed graveman and giving it "/dev/scd0" in preferences for my DVD writer fixed this problem.

Re: [SOLVED]graveman cant see disc

/dev/sr0 ftw

//blue/0/~/ ls -lR /dev | grep sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root             3 Feb 13 16:45 scd0 -> sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root optical    11,   0 Feb 13 16:45 sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Feb 13 16:45 11:0 -> ../sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Feb 13 16:45 cdrom-3:0:0:0 -> ../sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Feb 13 16:45 cdrw-3:0:0:0 -> ../sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Feb 13 16:45 dvd-3:0:0:0 -> ../sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Feb 13 16:45 dvdrw-3:0:0:0 -> ../sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  9 Feb 13 16:45 pci-0000:00:0e.0-scsi-1:0:0:0 -> ../../sr0

everything else is a symlink there anyway.
