Hey, as the subject already says, I have no Mic boost option anywhere, the Mic itself works but it's too quiet.
I was playing around with alsamixer to get it working in Skype, now that it does, I need the Mic boost option.
I installed Arch yesterday and been busy solving a lot of problems, but I wouldn't even know where to start on this one.
I was using Ubuntu/Kubuntu previously with the exact same hardware. But there was a Mic Boost option in Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I really don't want to go back, do I have to install specific drivers? Alsaconf detects my particular soundcard and Sound and recording work, just the Mic volume is too low although set to 100.
I'm using KDE 4.4 and Pulseaudio, works great so far. Skype is the only application I will ever need to have my Mic working, Autoconfiguration of sound settings in Skype is unchecked as it seemed to lower the volume of the Mic during a call.
Tell me if you need more information or some console output.

After days of trying, I finally managed to compile the Creative Linux drivers from the official homepage, apart from alsaconf not detecting anything anymore, nothing has changed.
Isn't there a way to edit some config file and manually add a mic boost option? As I said, mic boost was working in ubuntu, well, it was even there. Does somebody know where the config file for PCM, Master etc channels are, or better, is there such a file?
Offline
Serg,
I'm sorry to ask this but I want to make sure I understand the terminology being used here. When you say 'mic boost', do you mean 'a way to increase and decrease your mic volume when you plug in a mic jack into the sound card Creative X-Fi Titanium'?
If so, you could have found something in the 'Gnome Volume Controler' under 'Preferences' that might have helped you.
For example, I have a built in mic on my laptop that wasn't turned on when I installed Arch. I wanted it to work for my Skype as well. After some searching, I found that I just needed to enable 'Digital Mic' in 'Gnome Volume Control', increase the volume and make sure the 'Input Source' was still correct and I got it to work.
If that is not what you are talking about, please explain more about what you mean by 'mic boost'.
Thanks!

Yeah, increasing the volume sounds about right. In Windows and Ubuntu it is called Mic boost. When your microphone volume is maxed out and it is still too quiet, you enable Mic boost and eventually you have to turn the volume down again because it became too loud. It is increased by 6, 12, 18 or 20 db, at least these are the options I've encountered so far on any OS.
As I've mentioned before, there is no option for me to increase the microphone volume beyond the default slider in any of the mixers. But anyway, I double checked and nope, just "Microphone" (for playback) and "Microphone record", playback muted and volume set to 100, the recording slider not muted and also set to max.
Just tried stripping all sound support from the kernel, doesn't boot at all.
Tried uninstalling alsa and pulseaudio, rebooted, sound still works. Oddly enough nothing changed, Mic still the same, sound quality still the same, something is a bit off.

I found the config file I was looking for, /etc/aound.state. Edited it, loaded it with "sudo alsactl restore"... nothing happened. I've changed the value of "comment.dbmax" under 'Mic capture' to "3000", which is 30dB, but alsamixer doesn't recognize it. It still displays 0 dB as the maximum value. I've also tested directly after loading the changed config file, no difference either.
Is there another config file where the max values of the max values are stored? (So to speak)
And I tried adding a new entry, namely mic boost. I've copied the values from a asound.state from a different soundcard. alsactl reported unknown device... How do I "teach" my XFi driver what Mic boost is? Or to be precise, how do I change the snd_ctxfi module to accept higher maxdb values?

u have a x-fi soundcard too?
u have to change the input-socket to the front one...

And how do i change the input socket?

sorry this is a bit unrelated but i have an x-fi as well, i am just wondering if any of you have gotten 5.1 surround to work? i am using the snd-ctxfi driver as detected by udev.
i have tried both using the 3 analog outputs and coax output, with analog the volume is very low - with coax output volume is good, alsa stereo is good, and i can hear speaker-test output correctly to all speakers...
but whenever i try playing 5.1 mkv (configure pulseaudio to use 5.1 output and set vlc to use pulseaudio), i get a kind of muffled sound from my speakers (e.g. when playing a comedy series i can't really hear the people talk, but i can hear the background laughter).
what's the correct way to configure this thing for 5.1?
cheers.

There is no mic boost for any x-fi linux driver, as far as I know
Keep in mind that Line-in and Microphone are the same jacks on most x-fi. if you improperly set it to line-in and expects a microphone signal, no amplification will be made. You must select Microphone as the "Capture mode".
Also, the volume slider for the microphone channel seems to works very well as a booster/amplifier.
This is how it looks, on both kmix and alsamixer:
