"Best" sound card for me?

Hello!

I'm in need of a sound card (currently using onboard which sounds no different to me than some Creative card I had a while ago) with a digital optical in so that I can connect both my PC and my PS3 (if I decide to actually go ahead and buy one - feel free to comment on that tongue) to my sound system for 5.1 playback.
Seeing as there still seem to be quite a few issues regarding sound and Linux I was wondering if there was any sound card in particular that any of you could recommend?
I just want to be sure that I can get it to work the way it should before buying one and reading through tons of unsolved threads got me a little scared.

Don't know much about soundcards and connections in general.
Xonar D2/D2X should be well supported in ALSA.
I use a Xonar DX myself... no problem with "ordinary" usage atleast, but I don't think that one has the connection you wanted.

Thank you for your reply!
They are indeed not exactly what I need but the links you provided actually gave me a good idea of my options.
For some reason I didn't look through those on my own before. So, thank you!
