I recently installed lmms, then noticed that firefox and midori would not start, so I reinstalled firefox, now lmms, ardour, audacity (and probably other applications) will not load, running them from the command line they all produce the same error:
error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoryMidori is producing the same error but with libjpeg
I have tried re-installing the applications and reinstalling libpng and libjpeg with no luck.
The only thing that I can think of that might have triggered this breakage is when I synchronized pacman so that I could install lmms, pacman wanted me to do a full system upgrade but I selected no for fear of an upgrade breaking things, which seemed to happen anyway.

Doing a full system upgrade is the way to fix this. Those questions are all safe to answer "yes" to.

Thanks Allan
I'll try the full upgrade.
What would you recommend for "phonon"
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: kdelibs: requires phonon
pacman -S phonon
resolving dependencies...

:: phonon conflicts with qt. Remove qt? [Y/n]
I use XFCE4 but need KDE libraries for some software such as kdenlive
Removing QT does not sound like a good idea...
