I'm looking into buying a new laptop, and saw a Viao with a built-in Blu Ray player. Does anyone here have any experience with this? I don't want to spend the extra cash on a laptop with Blu Ray if I won't be able to play my movies on it with Linux.

It depends on what you mean by "play movies on Linux".
1) If you mean just throwing the disc in the drive and opening VLC media player and enjoying the popcorn. It ain't happening.
2) If you mean ripping the BD data to your HDD, breaking a few dozen US copyright laws in decryption...then you might be able to play a movie. Might.

Then I'll skip out on the Blu Ray player. I have no interest in ripping movies.

If you buy MakeMKV (linux version here), you can watch movies without ripping them. And MakeMKV handles all the DRM crap.
Also, what if the situation changes (Linux players get direct support for Blu-ray) and you're stuck without a Blu-ray drive? So I'd still get a laptop with Blu-ray.
