Okay...
I'm using Arch Linux for the first time, and this is probably the *only* time I've had to configure Xorg. I ran Xorg without xorg.conf, and Xorg ran. However, the GUI was terrible, illegible and generally useless. I could tell Xorg ran because I could see black dots appear randomly across the screen when I typed, and there was a bar of intermittent dots that moved when I moved my mouse. I typed in "shutdown -r now" and the computer restarted, so XTerm must have been running. However, I couldn't see anything at all. I tried using X -configure, and the resulting configuration gave me a black screen. I am using an Asus EEE PC (1000 HE) with a fresh install of Arch. Halp? I've tried Fluxbox and Openbox, but when I tried to execute them they "Could not open display" and when I added them to ~/.xinitrc and then entered "startx", I had similar issues but with slightly different colored dots. I have no idea what to do.

Sounds like you have a driver problem. I'm not sure what you need to get the EEE PC up and running but as long as you have hal running and start X with no xorg.conf, you should at least get the vesa driver loaded.
Can you post the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log when you run it without a config file.. see what driver it is using

To the best of my knowledge i believe that you should be using the xf86-video-intel driver (can get from the repositories, pacman -S xf86-video-intel). Insure you have that and that xorg.conf is set up to use it.

Yeah... Thanks all. I was in fact missing a vital driver (I noticed when I checked the log) and so I installed it with Pacman and am enjoying Fluxbox now. Again, thanks for your help.
