HAL won't start

I've just done a new install and I tried to install gnome, but when I start HAL it fails.
I've tried all the things suggested for people who had similar issues on the forums, but I can't find anything that works.

I put in

 hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes

And I get out

I'm trying to start GDM, but it fails, but I believe this is the cause of GDM failing
