KDE 4.4 slower than 4.3.4 in Arch?

Has anyone else found KDE 4.4 to be slower than the previous version?

I've an Asus laptop with a dual core processor and 2 gb of RAM, running Arch 64bit with KDE 4.4; nvidia 195.36.08-1, xorg-server 1.7.5-1.

Lately I've found that any kind of picture editing in Gimp is greatly slowed if I at the same time have, for instance, Kontact running, or a video in VLC, or a Youtube video (these I have tested so far).

I have also noticed that while KDE 4.3.4, with desktop effects on, ran very smoothly on my 1,6Ghz/1gb ram Samsung NC10 netbook (with Intel video drivers), KDE 4.4, with desktop effects and fairly similar organisation of virtual desktops etc., is slightly tardy.

As already stated in the news, the nvidia river has some bugs. You could try nouveau and see if that one works better.

Yes, I thought it might be the NVidia as well. But as I mentioned in my post, KDE 4.4 is slower than 4.3.4 also on my Samsung NC10 which does NOT use NVidia drivers but Intel ones.

Yes, it feels slower to me as well, but not unusable. It also feels less stable on all the machines that I've tried it on, but hopefully the next upgrade will fix some things.

Yes, I've also noticed the unstability: yesterday, for instance, when I was trying out different plasma themes, plasma crashed nearly every theme I switched a theme (about five times in all). I'm sure these things will get sorted out with the new upgrade though.

Re: KDE 4.4 slower than 4.3.4 in Arch?

I doubt that bitmap font (only bug listed in the news related to nvidia) has anything to do with kde 4.4 being slower.

Maybe try to check what is running.
1) restart system and see how much memory it takes after you log in (in my case 199MB)
2) see if you are running anything heavy on I/O (indexing services, akonadi, nepomuk and so on)
3) which nvidia driver ( I am using 195.36.03)
4) video card (I have Go 7400)
5) I do not see any slowdowns related to kde 4.4 update or system instability
6) this (ad5) means that your particular problem might be related to specific configuration. Unfortunately this does not exclude bug either in kde or nvidia

KDE 4.4 performance in effects is now improved with 195.36.03 (7300GT).

Re: KDE 4.4 slower than 4.3.4 in Arch?

KDE 4.4 has been unstable on my system, especially after the machine has been running for 2-3 days or more. There's some quite some flicker when Xorg/KDE is started - there was none with 4.3. When logging out and going to runlevel 3, and the machine has been running for a few days, I get an unintelligible font. Sometimes, also after running for a few days, logging in from runlevel 3 gives a black screen, however with KDE apparently running, as it responds normally to certain commands. The remedy is a reboot. I am using a Radeon card.

KDE was upgraded today. The login flicker is still there. In a few days I'll know if the other things are fixed.

Could this be linked to the latest xorg-server 1.7.5 rather than nvidia?
On my side it looks like X is using more cpu...

On Intel 4500MHD has KDE 4.4 same speed... Or I just couldn't mention the difference in speed...

Thanks for the GNU/Linux. EDIT:Thanks for the GNU/Linux, Linux guru, for the manuals and wikis.

In repos nvidia has been downgraded and xorg upgraded.
At first it seems the overall slowness is gone...
