CD-ROM has i/o errors with some applications

I'm using Arch64, fully updated.  When I try to play a music CD with XMMS or rip a CD with Grip, the kernel log constantly fills up with i/o error messages for /dev/sr0, which is a SATA DVD-RW.  Music playback occasionally stops for around a second and Grip often stops ripping a track and requires termination.  However, KsCD plays audio perfectly with no errors in the log and KAudioCreator rips perfectly without any log errors likewise.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?  Before I submit a bug report, I want to ensure that there isn't one open already (I have already looked but couldn't find one so far) and try to get more information to narrow the problem down.  It seems strange that the problem only happens with certain applications.  I have tried using XMMS and Grip using Windowmaker instead of KDE and can confirm that KDE isn't interfering.  Disabling HAL also didn't have any effect.

You need to install an RTFM interface.
