Dual Boot + VM with windows

Is it possible to run windows inside a VM on arch, but to have it use my NTFS windows partition that is also a dual boot instead of making a virtual drive? Basically I'd like to be able to run both OSs at once somehow.

Yes it's possible but you have to create a new Windows hardware profile. I remember reading an article about it. Let me have a look around for you.

These guides should do the trick!

I'm going to give it a shot this weekend, it seems like it might work.

Re: Dual Boot + VM with windows

Found this only after reading what you are trying to do: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=9697

I haven't read through it all properly yet but I am hoping I will be able to figure out how to use my existing /dev/sda1 NTFS partition for a VM, it has Win7 on it already...what do you think? Possible to use as is?

Edit: too late but more to read smile

Re: Dual Boot + VM with windows

From what I understand, vbox has no problem using an already existing install and virtualizing it.  I haven't done it myself but a friend has.  I would take a guess that when you choose the hard drive there is a way to choose the existing windows partition instead of making a vdi.  If not there then maybe there is a way with Vboxmanage from the command line.  I'll look into it some more, I'm curious as well.

I wasn't recommending VMWare. I only use VirtualBox but the concept is the same. I was in a hurry and that was all I could find at the time.

Re: Dual Boot + VM with windows

sudo qemu-kvm -m 512 -usb -usbdevice tablet -vga std -drive file=/dev/sda

This is how I do it. On first boot Windows will install some new drivers. And the ati driver says that it couldn't get loaded. But it is working fine.
