Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

I'm actually quite happy with the stock radeon driver. worked out of the box and as I'm not using this machine for gaming (or 3D) not to concerned about speed, as long as it can play video. There is one small problem most notably in a rdesktop. Black lines and blobs appear where screen updates just took place sometimes obscuring text completely. A force redraw normally removes these again.

what I noticed is one WW lines in the log regarding "DRI init changed memory map, adjusting " which I believed could be ignored.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

I have a Radeon HD4330 with the same issue. I couldn't fix it after looking for a solution for days, so I reverted X.org to 1.6, installed catalyst from AUR and everything seems to be fine so far. If someone has a solution that doesn't involve catalyst, I'm all ears.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Thanks dcc24,
I did some browsing in the AUR but frankly am overwhelmed with amount of packages that have "catalyst" in them. I'm probably dead and buried before I've tested them all. I have a fairly standard Asus EeePC N206. If someone does have experience with this setup.?

Btw downgrading to 1.6 does that have harsh effects? I'm using this machine basically as terminal and rdesktop MUST run. Anything else is a luxioury

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

AFAIK, you have two options.

First option:
Follow the instructions from the Chakra Project: http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1829

Second option:
Well, you can use the X server mentioned here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26687
There are links to precompiled binaries in the comments, so be sure to read them.

After that, the catalyst driver is here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

ok dcc24, trying that. switched to init 3 at reboot. took all the steps in First option. And untarred the tarball and makepkg -ed it
:: catalyst: conflicts with libgl
:: catalyst: conflicts with ate-dri

so
pacman -Rs libgl ati-dri

error: failed to preprare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
mesa, qt, xorg-server xorg-utils

so :
pacman -Rs mesa xorg-server xorg-server-utils
problems with freeglut, jasper, vlc

and by that time I realized I could go on forever removing needed packages. and end op doing a complete reinstall of archlinux.

so I stopped there
but thanks any way next time I will not setup xorg 7.4

basically libgl cannot be removed (replaced) on an installed X-system, right?

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Sorry about that last ramble. What appeared to by a minor problem shouldn't be repaired with a major fix (like downgrading your xorg-server, for heavens' sake what WAS I thinking?)

I will live with the suboptimal X11 1.7.4 support of ATI's Radeon HD3400 chipset and would recommend all of you to do the same. Until AMD (ATI) will come up with better drivers.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Something must have gone wrong in the process. There were instructions on downgrading for catalyst on the forum, but I couldn't find it now. I'm in a hurry, so I'll look more into it when I have time.

In the meantime, ask for directions for downgrading in this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Now I am very sorry indeed.

On close read my post could be read as a personal attack on you, dcc24, which was never, ever the idea, ever. and I deeply apologize, (honest (what WAS I thinking). edit in place.)

I'm very glad that someone was giving suggestions. So thanks a million for spending a few moments there.

Ok.  the downgrade on X didn went that well and probably need a bit of thinking over. Is this at all feasible with a working X? or something that should be attacked in a seperate installation anyway?

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

I think it is my post that was misunderstood. I wasn't trying to tell you to "go ask someone else" and I really couldn't see a personal attack on me, so no worries smile

The thing is, ATI on linux (catalyst, at the very least) does make one frustrated.  Still, this is actually feasible with X already installed. Here are some steps for downgrading, if memory serves:

- Add the xorg-old repo using the instructions here: http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1829 (Add it before "core")
- Execute this "pacman -Sy xorg-server xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard"
- Download the modified X.Org 7.4 here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/vj2zyyghx … pkg.tar.gz
If you are using 64bit, use this one instead: Here http://www.mediafire.com/?n0mmmtzmgmd
- After that get out of X.
- When you are on a tty, do "pacman -Syy" and "pacman -Suu", let it downgrade some packages.
- Then install the X server you've downloaded from AUR with this "pacman -U [newly downloaded X server from AUR]"
- Reboot

If all went well, X should start with catalyst. I'm not 100% sure of this process, but it seems about right. Let me know if you have any problems.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Right. I'm releived and will sleep a whole lot better tonight ^_^

I did do a pacman -Sy but not a Syy nor Suu so that might have thwarted pacman. The last problem encountered was with the libgl.

1) So after the change in pacman.conf the Syy went smooth the Suu aksed me to remove the xf86-video-ati which a confirmed.
2) all went fine and no error message appeared. actually input-evdev input-keyboard input-mouse were upgraded in the process
3) a makepkg --install in the catalyst folder generated the same conflicts with libgl and ati-dri ==> "Failed to install built package(s)".

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Before you try to install catalyst, do you have a succesfully downgraded X.org? If so, you can bypass those conflicts with removing them through "pacman -Rd" and then retry installing catalyst. If pacman refuses to remove them, use the force parameter and see if that works.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Consulting http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati
what I didn't know is the radeonhd drivers (xf86-video-radeonhd) I just assumed the "default" ati drivers .

Will test these right now.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Radeonhd drivers are usually in far worse shape than xf86-video-ati. Even catalyst works better for me smile

well the two conflicts are libgl and ati-dri.

Those cannot sensebly be uninstalled, everything seems to depend on those.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

I'm sure they can be removed with forcing pacman, I just don't seem to remember how. I'll take another look at it in the morning.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Ok, I got ATI's (AMDs) own driver installed which also required a downgrade of xorg but did't bother about libgl.
First libgl. After succesfull build the installation of the AUR catalyst package couldn't commence as libgl could not be replaced. Where pacman can be forced to install (btw a pacman -Rf libgl didn't work) makepkg cannot and therefor the package catalyst could not be installed. Now I know that the catalyst package is a wrapper around ATIs own installer so I tried that.

First I took dcc24 advice http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=1829 and changed pacman.conf to include the reference to the old xorg repository. Did a pacman -Syy and pacman -Suu to downgrade xorg-server etc. (this btw did not touch libgl)
Downloaded ati-driver-installer-10-2-x86_64.run chmod and ran it (as root) this had some magic text based ncurses like screens in it with questions I all agreed on. Apparently it made  all the proper changes to xorg.conf and just to make sure I reboot my machine (I had some change to alsa as well and those always require a reboot). It rebooted fine and loaded slim and xcfe4 withoutproblems. In the Xorg.0.log Is see a whole bunch of lines with references to fglrx(0) so I believe it does indeed load ati proprietary drivers (is there a way to make sure?)

Findings:
No artefacts anymore! Goal achieved. although I have a feeling I've slower updates in the rdesktop a bitblitter is clearly visible as top to bottom "wipe" which I don't remeber being there. Is this a xorg-server 1.6.3 to 7.x feat?  Anyway I'm going to test it for a view days.
many thanks to dcc24  for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Well, glad to see that it worked. Normally, Arch doesn't play well with ATI's own installer, but in your case it seems to have worked quite well.

Btw, the X.org server, by default has some problems with ATI cards (e.g slow windows refreshes etc.). If you encounter any of that use the modified X.Org 7.4 here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/vj2zyyghx … pkg.tar.gz
If you are using 64bit, use this one instead: Here http://www.mediafire.com/?n0mmmtzmgmd

Hope it helps.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

Also, I see you've installed the 10.2 driver which has a lot of problems for Linux users. I suggest using the 10.1 version. It might resolve some of the problems you've mentioned.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

hmm, on the amd (ati) server there is either a 9.8 or a 10.2 driver. oh and since this mornng only the 10.2 and the others are in Previous Drivers.

I installed now 10.1 but can not see a difference. From the Xorg.0.log I cannot really deduce wich version of the driver is used now. But the problems, most prominently in an rdesktop and double buffered conky seem to have gone. Now as screen redraws appear to be slightly slower it could mean that some performance features are switched of. Or is this more related to an older version of xorg-server?

currently I have problems with my webcam (probably unrelated)

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

while fighting with reduced acceleration, numerous catalyst packages and attempts thereof on my B206 Radeon HD resulting in no video playback, no possible console switching without crashing my machine, I almost decided to go back to xp (with which the graphics adapter on the B206 works like a breeze) TOday, I gave it one more try. Lo and behold the latest update of xorg server and radeonhd driver works perfectly. I can switch consoles, No corruption anymore. So the following setup works fine. What still is not perfect is full screen video.

# xorg-server 1.7.6-3
# xf86-video-radeonhd 1.3.0-1
# xf86-video-vesa 2.3.0-1
# xf86vidmodeproto 2.3-1

Thanks for bearing with me. I'm a happy arch-camper again.

Re: Radeon HD 3400 - small artefacts

...and after the upgrade to xf86-video-radeonhd 1.3.0-2 it is screwed again. what was changed here?

with screwed  I mean
1) switching to a console Ctl+Alt+Fx yields a black screen
2) switching back garbles the colours
3) screen redraw is sloooooowwwww
