Ok, so I recently dumped gnome for openbox, and I am in need of a volume control app. Before, typing alsamixer would bring up a little terminal dialog I could control it from, but not alsamixer doesn't open or anything. My sound worked flawlessly before.

You could try aumix, pacman -S aumix
I take it you installed alsa in openbox?
pacman -S alsa-utils alsa-oss
run alsaconf to detect soundcard
run alsamixer to adjust vol
add alsa daemon to rc.conf

I actually uninstalled gnome and installed openbox. I have alsa-oss and alsa-utils installed and if I run alsamixer, I get this:
[brad@localhost ~]$ /usr/bin/alsamixer
[brad@localhost ~]$
It doesn't seem to be doing anything. I get the same output when running as root

Try reinstalling alsa, sudo pacman -S alsa-utils alsa-oss
