Hi all,
I have Arch running on my laptop since a year, recently i started to have a very annoying problem, with few just few X client sometimes i can't open any X program, for example mousepad from the terminal will show:
Maximum number of clients reached
(mousepad:21270): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
while
xlsclients | wc -l
shows 24 clients? the maximum should be 255!
The only one thing that might be related which i did recently was to install compiz and enabling desktop effects, but i removed them completely including the user configuration files that are left, after that i started to see the problem occasionally.
Any hint?

Having the same problem here, can't init skype or gnome-do. But in my case:
[pyronhell@pyronhell ~]$ xlsclients | wc -l
Maximum number of clients reachedxlsclients: unable to open display ":0.0"
0
Shows zero :S
I will keep investigating this.
Edit: My specs: Arch 64, asus gtx295, dual-screen

Okay, i found the solution myself, recently i started using MinimizeToTrayPlus for thunderbird, it turns out that this addon is buggy for Linux, the author doesn't seem to be familiar with GTK/GLib, after examining the source code seems that he creates a lot of GtkStatusIcon without destroying them after, which cause the server leaks. (problem is in version 1.0.8 for reference).
I reported to him here:

I found the problem in my case, it was Google Chrome, I closed it and every program no works I think that it was the flash plugin, but... don't really know tbh.

My problem was chrome, no doubt of it. Have been using firefox since yesterday and no error comes aroud (have tested with google-chrome and chromium, but got the same errors).

Any updates on this?
After a recent update, when I tried to launch chromium (or google-chrome) via terminal I got a parse error for the file "/usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids"
After I re-installed some related programs
pacman -S usbutils pciutils hwids
I was able to run chromium again, but now I get this max clients error.
Here is the output of xlsclients
$ xlsclients
Maximum number of clients reachedxlsclients: unable to open display ":0.0"
How can I go about debugging this?
EDIT: The bug is with VLC. When VLC is closed, everything works as expected.

beardedlinuxgeek this is a rather old thread so things may have changed in the meantime. Thus do not bump it but open a new thread of your own and link back here for reference. Chances will be better for an answer then.
Closing this one.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.
