Install both and see which one you prefer...

This is Arch... try both and keep the one that you prefer.
Or get a head start and install Openbox right away.

If it is your first touch of a Linux system the suggestion is to try both.
But, IMHO i'd prefer install gnome because is more lightweight. Eventually, when get tired of Gnome, try with openbox/fluxbox, etc.

It depends on what you mean by "lightweight". A KDE minimal and a Gnome install both require downloading about 300-400MB of packages.

I'd say they both suck (KDE more) and you should use XFCE.
My real answer is that this is all personal preference and you will get nothing but biased answers for such a question.

I say your all wrong and you should install XMonad.
And Allan is right, this is totally subjective!

Should I have Mcdonalds or KFC for lunch?
Same type of question . I use Gnome though, out of habit.

Only if you are dining in a greasy spoon with windows. I think the meals served here are tastier, healthier, and prepared with a lot more pride...

For me, KDE was a mess, is a mess, and will be a giant piece of mess. No offence, but KDE is more redundant than even Windows.
As a beginner, you can either go with GNOME/Xfce/Lxde, or try using only a window manager like Openbox/fluxbox/pekwm.
The former allows simplicity in installation, as you do not need to install core applications.
The latter, however, gives you flexibility in choice of applications.
It is like the difference between a good mass-produced suit and a bespoke suit.
Archers take their arrows in the knee.

I agree with the install them all and discard what you hate approach.
One thing I found helpful in chosing the right window manager / desktop environment was to install the different Ubuntu flavours on a test machine. There were a bunch of different flavours using different desktop environs, so that I could check out the desktop feel. Chances are that you'll hate a lovely window manager or desktop environment simply because the default install is bare-bones and sucks.
Having said that: OpenBox ftw!

*snickers* ALl of that is too heavy! Go JWM! Or if you are really adventerous, go TinyWM!
In all seriousness, Arch is not Ubuntu, Fedora, Windows, Mac, openSUSE, Madriva, etc... We don't pick your DE/WM for you. As has been repeated in thousands of like threads, install them all and test them all and see which one you like best, remove the rest when done.
If you really want to know what everyone likes the most, take a look at the Best WM poll, http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 10#p726210
Anyways, happy hunting and welcome to Arch!

I say KDEmod. But that's just my opinion...
But seriously KDEmod is the best KDE (again for me) there is.
try it or try both regular KDE and KDEmod.
It also depends what kind f computer you have and what you wish to do with it.
But if you have a "normal" computer I suggest KDEmod.
It could be a bit of a problem on older hardware (not necessarily).
If you wish the best of your Linux KDE is the right choice (again that's my opinion ).

Capitalising the 's', 'o' and 'b' will result in a failure. The OpenBox package name is all lower-case.
This page should help out: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ope … stallation

Umm... if you are asking for help choosing between Gnome and KDE, then you probably want a fully set up desktop system. Then, openbox may not be for you.

I agree with Allan and my comment should probably not be taken too seriously. :-) If you use a WM like OPenBox you'll have to install your own taskbar, screensaver, wallpaper manager and whatnot. Full desktop environemnts like KDE or Gnome are certainly easier if that's your first install. You can install them both (or more) at them same time and switch back and forth until you decide for one. Pacman makes installing and removing them quite easy.

Or instead of installing OpenBox install LXDE which is a very lightweight DE which uses OpenBox as it's WM.
It's my second favourite DE after KDE.
