Super key to open panel menu while using compiz

Hi, I am new to Arch, I have tried a few times to install before but actually sat down today and got this masterpiece set up big_smile. All I was wondering now is how do I set up Compiz so that I can use just the super key on my laptop to open the panel menu? I tried editing it to just super and it doesn't seem to like it for whatever reason. This is probably the one Windows feature I could not live without.. I so wish I'd started out my computing days on Linux, then alt+F1 would be the norm cool thanks in advance

Do you try with other effects, are they work?
If you change the key to Alt or Ctrl, Is it work?

Re: Super key to open panel menu while using compiz

I think it is because it treats it like a modifier key (such as ctrl, alt or shift) and so wants me to input a combination instead of just a single key, however it is just the super key I want for opening panel. I don't use any short cuts that require me to press it at the same time as other things. alt and ctrl on their own would not work, super key on its own in other effects does not work either.

Re: Super key to open panel menu while using compiz

Well, i don't think Compiz have that feature.
Like you said super key is a modifier and as such it needs another key to combine.
If you look in Shortcuts ( System > Preferences ), you find that to launch the panel menu you have to press Alt+F1, maybe you can change to Mod4+F1 (Mod4=super key).

Re: Super key to open panel menu while using compiz

I can get super to work on its own when I'm not running compiz, however I think that the compiz settings take over once it is enabled. Is there anyway to override these and get it to use the GNOME settings instead?

Re: Super key to open panel menu while using compiz

I have no experience with xmodmap and after using Google to search around I can't seem to get my head around it (the arch wiki also left me feeling somewhat confused too). How do I go about setting it up correctly? This is the final thing that I can't seem to get sorted, and the only thing I have been unsuccessful in Googling a solution.

Arch has shown me just how much I really don't know! I like learning though otherwise I'd still be like all the other sheep and using Windows like we have all been brainwashed to believe is good (well obviously not the Linux community) big_smile I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has given their time to provide me with support and I hope I have not annoyed you too much with my questions.

A finely crafted guide for xmodmap neophytes: http://everything2.com/title/Extra%2520 … %2520Linux .
