There's a quiet staticky sound using my onboard sound (snd-hda-intel). This does not occur on windows. Also when I use the digital out.
I've beeen avoiding this problem, but my subwoofer that had a digital input on it recently died and I replaced it with one that does not.
Any thoughts on how to get rid of this annoying background noise.

I'm using ALSA with DMix turned on. I'm also running KDE so there's the whole Phonon thing (but Phonon plugs into ALSA)

Please post output of $(amixer). At least on my system, setting certain inputs causes this.

When trying to get digital out to work, I turned on all the channels to max, so that's probably the problem:

Okay, having 'Line' enabled (has '[on]' in the listing) causes a sort of background hissing on my machine. Also you might consider disabling 'Front Mic'.
amixer set ... offLine is probably the playthrough output control. It sticks input from your machine's audio-in port into the output stream. *Mic are probably the same thing, but taking input from the microphone instead.
At least with my hardware, when nothing is plugged into the audio-in, it makes a hissing noise. I haven't actually tried sticking in a microphone so I don't know what it does when something is plugged in.
