{SOLVED} - Chain Boot

I have a PC I am currently running Windows XP on.  I just added a second HDD with a good running install of Arch on it.  So....how do I tell the Windows bootloader to look for the second HDD? or do I install an Arch bootloader on the Windows machine?

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

replace the windows bootloader with [wiki]grub[/wiki] on the first hard drive to be able to boot both systems.

Yep, or use bootpart or similar.

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

using grub you just have to specify the correct hard drive/partition (i.e. hd0,1 or hd1,5 - whatever the case may be for your particular setup) in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

having trouble installing GRUB...I boot my Arch live cd and it wont let me skip to Install Bootloader (because it wants me to do the other steps in the Arch install process)

In tools I saw "Install Bootloader (or GRUB cant remember) to hd0 (which is the drive I want to get it on....BUT Arch Live crashes when I do this sad

Hehe, fuckstick, that is quite funny. Never been called that before tongue

Well BarefootSoul83, I was only trying to guide you to different documentation. You said the one you are using is not working for you. Hence:

And even though that let me google that for you is old - it is quite funny.

Anyway, back to your problem of not being able to install grub. If you cannot make any sense of the google hits, you may want to try this lol

But before you get really angry, you may want to have a loot at super grub disk in the hope that it helps.

First of all, calm down, please.
What you may be missing is that there is a simple way of (re)installing GRUB to a disk, from the GRUB shell. You needn't launch the Arch installer at all.

Assuming you have grub on your second HDD, instead of chain loading, your BIOS may let you change the boot order of your disks; so that the second hard drive is used instead of the first to boot the system.

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

Let me clarify then:

I have a PC
It has 2 HDD (not 1 HDD partitioned)
Master = XP
Slave = Arch

I have tried installing the bootloader several times now....
- only on the Windows HDD
- on both

Arch boots fine....

Windows boots into something lie a graphical memtest......

ANY SUGGESTIONS? smile

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

Oh, in that case, are you using grub to boot Windows?

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

No, no, you only need to install grub on one HDD. There is a lot of information lacking, but here's what I think you'd want to do. You need to correctly set an entry for Windows in your grub config. So first we need to know what version of grub you are using. Then we can go on from there.

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

It is installed? Good. Which one? 1 or 2? Are your XP stanzas in /boot/grub/menu.lst or /boot/grub/grub.cfg okay? If not sure you could post them.

Re: {SOLVED} - Chain Boot

GRUB version 0.97

as for the XP stanza....it was pretty basic...I used what was there...uncommented all but the top line.... and made sure my HDD's were respectively listed.... XP = hd 0,0 Linux = hd 1,0
