Re: media server

I was just about to ask the same question. For the xbox you can just setup samba shares and it should work fine. If you have a hacked original xbox you can stream just about any standard definition movie format (the processor is too slow to decode high def).

If youre trying to stream movies to your xbox 360 its a pain since MS only allows MP4 and AAC IIRC. Theres a bunch of links, tutorials, scripts and programs out there on how to do it but I havent had much success with any of them, FFMPEG will do it but theres a bug in it (or atleast there was) that stops encoding after 90 minutes for some reason.

Good luck man.

Re: media server

I use Mediatomb for streaming to my ps3. It took me a while to get it to transcode some formats so that they will actually play, but once you get that to work (or alternatively if you only use files in formats the player supports) it is a pretty smooth experience.

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.
