Ati Driver

Hi,
    Well it's my first post so I hope it's in the right section. I'm trying to instal compiz on my PC and I've downloaded the compiz-check script to help me to do so. I'm still using the vesa driver and had some troubles with the open-source drivers before (probably because of my lack of knowledge). Finally I decided to install the catalyst propietary driver to see what happended but then when I tried to install it this error happened:

==================================================
ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================
which: no XFree86 in (/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/opt/kde/bin:/usr/bin/perlbin/site:/usr/bin/perlbin/vendor:/usr/bin/perlbin/core:/opt/qt/bin)

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:x86_64:lib::none:2.6.32-ARCH; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

Im using Arch 64bit  with GNOME and an "ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]"  and actually using vesa and AIGLX. I was wandering if someone could please tell me how to solve that problem or how to install the corresponding open-source driver propetly.
PD: I had no problem installing the open source drivers but then I ran the compiz-check script again and I was still using vesa. Actually I don't have those drivers installed any longer.
Thank you in advance. smile

Re: Ati Driver

Old ati card? Why not use xf86-video-ati then? (It works great with compiz even without a xorg.conf)

Re: Ati Driver

Have you read the ATi wiki page?
There is some excellent information there which will address many of your questions. I would also recommend the xf86-video-ati driver.

Re: Ati Driver

Well, I re-installed arch completely because I deleted some files accidentally. Now I have compiz working perfectly with xf86-video-ati and without xorg.conf.
There are only two problems without anything to do with compiz:
* AWN is 0.3.2 instead of 0.4 using pacman, and downloading the tarball from the AUR I just couldn't configure it because there was a config file missing, something like that.
* I cannot configure GDM2 even with gdm2-setup
Thank you anyways wink
PD: Motion Blur plugin won't work but I don't need it..

Re: Ati Driver

AWN seems to only have a release candidate available for 0.4, thus 0.3.2.1 is the latest release. (if you think otherwise flag the package as out of date to notify the maintainer...)
GDM2 does not (yet) have an offficial setup utility as it had prior. But some tricks are available: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … g_gdm_2.28
