[SOLVED] Gnome hangs (displays nothing) on startup

Ok, just did a fresh Arch FTP install this afternoon and despite running into a few problems (installer didnt setup using UUID like it was supposed to so wrong drives booted anyways) I finally got to the point of installing X and Gnome to have a useable system.

X installed and configured without any issues. I can run it and pull up an xterm fine. So, I then installed gnome, added it to my xinit.rc file and tried to run it using startx. At that point the console is replaced with a black screen with the oldschool X cursor that I can move but nothing else. I cant kill anything, cant switch to another screen. Nothing. After about 15mins it times out and crashes back to the console.

It only displays a few lines of errors the primary being:

gnome-session[10786] : WARNING: Unable to determine sesssion: Unable to lookup session information for process '10786'
gnome-session[6868]: WARNING: Unable to determine session : Unable to lookup session information for process '6868'
Window manager warning: CurrentTime used to choose focus window; focus window may not be correct
Window manager warning: Get a request to focus the no_focus_window with a timestamp of 0. This shouldn't happen!
gnome-session[10786]: WARNING : Unable to stop system: Not authorized
gnome-screensaver: Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.

There's no messages with errors in the X log files, nothing in dmesg and if there's a specific log file for gnome and its parts I cant find it. I'm out of ideas at this point.

The only thing I could think of that might have caused a problem was I installed all of gnome and its part as a normal user using sudo. To check to see if that was the problem I ALSO then reinstall everything as root before dropping into my normal user account. Nothing.

Any thoughts?

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome hangs (displays nothing) on startup

Ok, so further playing shows that switching to the vesa driver for X instead of radeon/radeonhd allows me to log into both gnome AND KDE.

Further looking seems to be the same reason I had under Windows with this graphics card. its an ATI Radeon 2600XT AGP which was never really supported by ATI and apparently that lack of support/bridge chip keeps it from working under linux.

Swapping in an older NVIDIA FX5200 card worked perfectly
