Applications crash often

Hi,

I have this problem, I dont know since wich update, but lately some applications I use crash randomly and irritably often.
Namely firefox, it just crashes with SIGABRT randomly, mostly when I click a link, but sometimes the same link doesn't make a crash.
Also Chromium, this one throws SIGABRT or SIGSEGV usually right after the GUI is shown.
Krunner sometimes goes down as well, and maybe few more minor apps I dont remember right now...

All these applications come from official packages from standard repos.

How can I figure out if this is a problem of each of these applications independently or if theres something wrong
with my system (which I'm afraid is the case)?

Any help much appreciated

Re: Applications crash often

Could you attemp to fun firefox from the terminal and let it run, set your buffer higher (9999)  and when it crashes paste the logs...

Re: Applications crash often

I already tried that, although I'm not sure what you mean by the "buffer higher (9999) " thing.

Unfortunately, firefox doesn't write anything to stdout, this is my output:

vojta|vojta-dell ~/builds $> firefox &
[1] 23087
vojta|vojta-dell ~/builds $>
[1]+ Neúspěšně ukončen (SIGABRT) firefox

I tried firefox --no-xshm  as well, but the problem persists.

EDIT: sorry for the localization

I also tried running chromium from console, but it didnt stdout anything as well,
But later I found this in dmesg:

chromium[22721]: segfault at 7fe1e8150c60 ip 00007fe1b49e533a sp 00007fe1b4fbcf10 error 4
chromium[22719]: segfault at 7fe1e8150c60 ip 00007fe1b49e533a sp 00007fe1c22b1f10 error 4 in libnss_wins.so[7fe1b47c6000+30d000] in libnss_wins.so[7fe1b47c6000+30d000]

Re: Applications crash often

All I can say is that they both work perfectly for me - and if it had been something wrong with the applications, there would have been an outcry like you have never seen before!

Are you updated with the very latest?
What is your wm?
Do you have any 'strange' hardware?
Are you running a mix of 64-bit and 32-bit?

Re: Applications crash often

-I'm using Gnome (Metacity).
-The architecture is 64-bit, without 32-bit applications.
-Run yaourt -Syu --aur every day.

About the hardware, the only recent change is replace my the RAM memory to a pair of dual channel DDR1 OCZ (OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K - Retai), they are running with 2.8v.

Thanks.

EDIT:
I forgot to say that i ran the Memtest86+ v4.00 without errors.

Re: Applications crash often

-I use KDE (Compiz, Openbox, Kwin)
-architecture is 64-bit (with some 32-bit apps/libs such as wine, skype, but I'm not using them ATM)
-system is up to date
No special hardware, its a Dell Inspiron laptop, which has always worked fine in linux.

Re: Applications crash often

Hi,
I have discussed  this on czech forum and guys over there helped me to find the cause of this, at least it seems so.
Those crashes were (in my case) caused by samba libs, namely libnss_wins. To fix this, edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and remove all references to 'wins'.
(Or uninstall samba)

Re: Applications crash often

Thanks kralyk, but unfortunately it was not my same problem. I try even reinstall Archlinux from the scratch, but the problem persist, though not as often.

Re: Applications crash often

Solved. It was a hardware problem. Back to my old memory, and all works fine now.
