A rather weird question but I was unable to find an answer on the forums or on the wider web.
Where are application icons stored? I mean the icons of applications such as Evince, File-roller etc.
I couldn't find them anywhere and compiz desk-menu wants me to specify an icon name.
Another question is where apps such as compiz desk-menu search for icons when I specify a file name?

on my system: /usr/share/icons

I mean application icons, not icon themes.
There are some in /usr/share/pixmaps but only for a few apps.

On my system, the icon for file-roller is in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/ and evince is in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/

And I thought 'hicolor' is just another icon theme like the other folders I've got in the /usr/share/icons directory... my bad, sorry for the trouble

I know this is an old post, but I figured it'd be better to ask here than to open a new one.
So when you install an app, where is the official location where the icons are stored for the app? "/usr/share/icons/hicolor" was mentioned above. Is that the default location???
It's just that DosBox, FileZilla, and Skype have low-res icons and I want to swap them out for custom ones.

Best to read the freedesktop specification which tells you where application icons and icons themes should reside.
