X server restarts with a segmentation fault

Hello,
I have been experiencing seemingly random X crashes which get it to restart, and the the X log pointed me this:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x496608]
1: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x67999) [0x467999]
2: /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x7f9c5d80e000+0xee80) [0x7f9c5d81ce80]
3: /usr/bin/X (FindGlyphRef+0x2c) [0x53013c]
4: /usr/bin/X (FindGlyphByHash+0x28) [0x5306e8]
5: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0xbe36e) [0x4be36e]
6: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x27fd4) [0x427fd4]
7: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x21aac) [0x421aac]
8: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x7f9c5cab8b6d]
9: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x21659) [0x421659]
Segmentation fault at address 0x4

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

While searching the forum, I found an unsolved thread mentioning similar problem, caused by a certain KDE email client, where the guy who posted had his input devices disabled getting the same error. However, in my case it is with no apparent reason: one time I witnessed the event by chance, when I was nowhere near my laptop, and had left it idle for nearly half an hour. Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: X server restarts with a segmentation fault

ok, I experienced the crash again and this time after x was gone, slim's CPU consumption jumped to 100% and it couldn't restart, so I had to kill it (i checked it with top because I noticed my fan went full speed). Maybe it is a slim related problem then?

Re: X server restarts with a segmentation fault

I'm having a similar problem when starting the MythTV frontend, which for me (with nvidia driver) crashes the X server every time.  The most promising thing I turned up is here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg … bug/401045

That leads me to believe that there's an upstream patch that fixes a similar issue.  I hope to try the version of xorg-server in testing, and maybe just the patch.

Re: X server restarts with a segmentation fault

Building xorg-server with this patch:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserve … 469b56b69b

Stopped the crash for me!  'Course, fonts in mythfrontend are all messed up, but I think that might be a separate issue.  smile

EDIT:  it was.  Myth wants the MS core fonts.
