MP3 and restricted codec support

hi,

finally I have my system set and running. I did go for the KDE4 which I like very much and followed all the steps as stated in the Beginner'S Guide.

However, I don't have MP3 neither other multimedia propietary format access like MP4, AAC, MOV, WMA, WMV or RMVB - I carry my multimedia collection of songs, videos and movies from when I was on WinXP (yikes!)- despite I installed Xine and other utilities as desccribed in the Beginner's Guide.

I do can watch some AVI files but can't access sound stream so they're muted. How do I add full multimedia support to my fresh shiny Arch? I did try to search the forums but there's to seem a problem because I keep receiving desconnections errors.

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

Did you install the gstreamer (ugly-bad-good)?

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

hi n0dix,

I didn't do that because I'm running KDE4 and I think KDE uses different audio libraries.
Anyways, I will ask in the DE sub forums, thanks for help!

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

if you installed xine-lib you need phonon-xine.

we got all bunch of codecs ready to use, you only need to use the right backend.

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins  works for me.

Most of the earlier bugs (like mp3 song transition) have been fixed now.

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

Ok, so, your choice is a matter of taste, right? Since I'm running KDE I'll go with the phonon-xine for now but will swtich to gstreamer is I see any issue while playing media.
Thanks!

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

just to be clear, gstreamer is not related to gnome in any way. is a separate project like xine is.

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

@wonder: well, thanks for that, being green as I am I allways used to think phonon-xine was KDE friendly/related and gstreamer GNOME friendly, lol roll

While phonon-xine works great I found volume a bit low for videos, can be installed both phonon-xine and gstreamer without arise issues and use each backend on demand (since many apps let you choose what backend you want to use)?

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support
why did you opened a new thread instead of discussion in the previous one?

oops, I did it again, sorry! (yeah, I know you prefer Brtiney saying that cool)
I just did the same of my very first post: promise to don't screw things again and follow the rules.

@Bralkein: thanks for your tips and useful research, I will stick with xine until I backup my root, then maybe I try gstreamer.
@.:B:.: I have panic of installing things that can break my system, before installing Arch few days ago I came from an entire life in *buntuland, so you'll see : D

Re: MP3 and restricted codec support

There's very little that can break your installation just by being installed - especially because 99% of the time you have to configure stuff yourself wink.
