Dependency hell - again :(

ive been using arch for like a year, and this has happened to me twice so rather than re-install i thought id ask for advice this time.

i installed openoffice 3 so it wouldnt start so i ran it in xterm it said shared library libjpeg blah blah so i thought it just needed libjpeg so i installed (i guess upgraded) libjpeg so now open office works but mplayer and a few other wont run

mplayer /mnt/temp/videos/review/nameof.avi
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

it worked before, infact minutes before.

so i though i might try full system upgrade:

:: Synchronizing package databases...
 core is up to date
 extra is up to date
 community is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
:: Replace avidemux with extra/avidemux-cli? [Y/n] y
:: Replace jack-audio-connection-kit with extra/jack? [Y/n] y
:: Replace kdelibs-experimental with extra/kdelibs? [Y/n] y
:: Replace kernel-headers with core/linux-api-headers? [Y/n] y
:: Replace klibc with core/mkinitcpio? [Y/n] y
:: Replace klibc-extras with core/mkinitcpio? [Y/n] y
:: Replace klibc-kbd with core/mkinitcpio? [Y/n] y
:: Replace klibc-module-init-tools with core/mkinitcpio? [Y/n] y
:: Replace klibc-udev with core/mkinitcpio? [Y/n] y
:: Replace policykit with extra/polkit? [Y/n] y
resolving dependencies...
warning: dependency cycle detected:
warning: xorg-server will be installed before its nvidia-173xx-utils dependency
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: kdelibs: requires phonon

no matter what i say yes or no to it wont upgrade anything. what do i do?

im using the archlinux.org repos or my country (nz) either one is the same.

Re: Dependency hell - again :(

Read the news:  http://www.archlinux.org/news/483/

Or a forum search would have found 100 similar threads....

And a full update will fix your issue.

Re: Dependency hell - again :(

First:
pacman -S --asdeps qt phonon
See http://www.archlinux.org/news/483/ and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=90629  for details.

-Sy foobar is bad(tm), it tends to break stuff, as you just noticed. You should always -Syu before you install anything.

You should also read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pac … save_Files and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57205

Re: Dependency hell - again :(

if you use a mplayer build from aur, you should rebuilt it or use mplayer from extra

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
