My laptop (Dell Inspiron 5000) hangs (when I try to load snd-es1968 (strace says it hangs on init_module). Hotplug also hangs when it initializes the PCI bus the soundcard is on. On boot; the kernel throws 'Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 0000:00:07.1'; but it has always done that without causing any problems
What else to try?

Problem solved by using kernel26-mm3
I assume that patches in mm will be merged into the main kernel eventually?

I'm running into a similar problem. I have a Compaq Armada M300 with a ESS Technology ES1978 Maestro 2E. Modprobing snd-es1968 freezes my computer.
Edit: Okay, I just tried snd-es1968 on this other kernel and it worked for me as well. I don't really know what this kernel26mm is or if it's going to cause any other problems but I'm happy to have working sound finally
Hopefully this fix can get patched into the regular Arch kernel, I don't like the idea of using some third-party kernel..
