ok...so I get this error on startup
failed to start message bus Error in file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/gdm.conf line 1 column 16 not well formed
I have xfce4, dbus, hal, gamin, gdm, and all the xf86-input-synaptic and such all freshly installed on this laptop...
when I startxfce4 it opens but no keyboard or mouse.... am I missing something? last time I did this all I needed was the xf86 drivers and such and it worked fine.
Could I have installed hal or gdm wrong?
When I tried to gdm from the command line I get:
/usr/sbin/gdm line1: syntax error near unexpected token '('
/usr/sbin/gdm line 1: 'n tfds_in_quene (1:2)'

Is hal started? Do you use input hotplugging or xorg.conf?

I use xorg... Hal (being tied to dbus) is not starting and giving me this error:
failed to start message bus Error in file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/gdm.conf line 1 column 16 not well formed

Another reason I hate gdm
Maybe try slim?

Sorry that this doesn't directly solve your problem. I just thought of a suggestion
Also, reinstalling them never hurt. Maybe run:
pacman -S hal
pacman -S dbus
pacman -S gdm
