I have done this before.
sudo mount /dev/cdrom0 /media/cd
Or something along those lines, on a different setup. It's really nothing special. Just now however I've decided I want to rip this CD, and I have nothing to mount. /dev/cdrom doesn't exist. /dev/sr0 does not exist (I'm using a sata drive). So I don't know what to mount...

Is that a music CD? If so, you cannot mount a music CD because they do not have valid filesystems on them. Just use a CD ripping application to do the job. From the command line you can use "cdparanoia", whereas a lightweight GUI app you might like is "ripperX".

why are you trying to mount your cd as root? it's probably not necessary, and could be potentially dangerous. instead you should make your user part of the optical group,
and use an fstab entry to mount/unmount optical media.
oh yeah, and lagagnon is right about music cd's not having any sort of filesystem on them. for what you are trying to accomplish I would suggest finding a simple cd ripping program.

I'm using abcde. Got this:
[ERROR] abcde: CDROM has not been defined or cannot be found
I just assumed I needed to mount it or something...

No cdrom drives accessible to wes found.
I'm also in the optical group... so I should have access to sg0 and sg1...
The same command as root yields the same results...
Reboot fixes everything apparently...

Or
