Any way to change the tray icon of an application?

I don't know exactly where this fits best, so I just put it here, please move it if its inappropriate here.

How do I change the tray icon of an app? Is there an easy way to do that without editing source code?
Maybe a folder where apps often store their tray icons?
Or change the gtk/icon theme?

It depends on what icon you want to change.
Some tray icons are taken from icon theme (example: Transmission), while other icons come from /usr/share/pixmaps (example: Pidgin) and few apps have their tray icons stored even somewhere else.
