Looks almost like there are too many users to support such functionality. Have we reached the bounds of phpbb??

EDIT: Hmm. Likely not. From the phpbb site:

Tracked it down via some google craftiness. phpbb support topic linked to this.

Looks like the forum server's mysql config packet size is too small.
