[SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

Hello,
I use SLIM and Openbox on my machine but occesionally I open a tty console (Ctl + Alt + F1). I rescentlly noticed I can no longer do that. I open  TTY, type my username, and instead of getting asked for a password I get another username prompt. It's like this with all of my tty's, and updating my system doesn't help. Some people told me to rebuild my locals but it did not help either. Here is the output of strace:

read(0, "g", 1) = 1
write(1, "g", 1) = 1
read(0, "a", 1) = 1
write(1, "a", 1) = 1
read(0, "l", 1) = 1

EDIT: Silly me, turns out /etc/login.defs didn't exist. Must've forgotten to rename a .pacnew file. So I renamed it and now everything's normal. Thank you everyone who replayed below.

Re: [SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

Looks like it's logging something to syslog at the end. Have you looked there to see what it says?

Re: [SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

Have you tried a different username?   You might try either root, or create a new user and try that account (I looking for issues in the various *rc files you might have.

Root gives the same problem.

Re: [SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

Well, I was wondering if the system not allowing the tty to change ownership -- but root also has the problem.

You might try checking which shell is set for your users in /etc/passwd, and then check that the shell really exists at the specified path, and that it is executable.  You might also check that the home directory for you users (also specified in /etc/passwd) is mounted and your user has the appropriate rights to that directory.

Other than that, I am running out of altitude, airspeed and ideas all at the same time.  There was one thing in your trace I did not understand.  Why is your system looking to the floppy drive?  I wonder if that is contributing to the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

open("/etc/login.defs", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

Could it be related to your problem ?

Re: [SOLVED] I can't open a tty console on my machine

Make sure that /bin/login is working. /sbin/agetty starts login to get the password after getting the username from you.
