I'm also experiencing this issue.
I solved downloading skype 64bit version for ubuntu 8.10 from http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-64 .
Once you download just extract the archive, I used Ark for that, and you'll find an executable called skype in control.tar.gz/usr/bin .. just copy it where you like and execute it from there.

An easier solution just use the bin32-skype-static from AUR

I only have 32 bit libs on my system just to use Skype.. Now with the 64 bit version I can remove all of them. Better using 64 bit versions of the software if available (IMHO).
