Sound Problem

So randomly my gnome-mixer-applet stops working.  It's set to 0 volume and any attempt to change it does nothing.  However my music still works through rhtyhmbox.  If I try opening the volume control through the applet it tells me "sorry no mixer elements and/or devices found."  I tried gstreamer-register as both root and user.  No help.  I checked my permissions, which were messed up, because I somehow removed myself from all groups except user and optical when I was trying to add myself to the optical group.  So i added myself to the audio group (this is the correct group, i checked my udev permissions).  So I am only in 3 groups (users, optical, audio), which may be a problem.  But i should have access to the mixer.  If I login to gnome as root, the applet works fine.  Any ideas?

Re: Sound Problem

this was a strange problem,
have you tried alsamixer program?
it sounds more like gnome bugs than permission problems,

arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

Re: Sound Problem

Yes, alsamixer worked...

I managed to somehow fix this by calling

gst-register --gst-plugin-path=/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.8/

and then rebooting.

as gst-register fixed this problem once before, but I noticed my .gstreamer/registry.xml didn't contain any info.  Real annoying bug.
