[solved] dock-like panel

greetings,

i'm using archlinux with gnome, but replaced metacity with openbox, otherwise it's all gnome. i'm now looking for a panel to use as kind of like a dock, similar to xfce4-panel, but preferably more integrated with gnome. i'm using gnome-panel at the moment, and i'd like something just like that, but with the ability to use only icons to switch windows.

since i've no experience with panels other than gnome's or xfce's, i'm asking for a little advice. i've seen the panel section of the wiki about openbox, but i'd like to ask for some specific things, and i've noticed that there are open source stuff for almost every little esoteric thing, you just have to know where to find it.

so it should have:

- application launchers, and it would be nice to be able to add them directly from gnome's menus.
- window switcher with only icons (like xfce4-panel's iconbox)
- a trash applet which can integrate with nautilus's trash
- autohide feature
- preferably a gui to manage its settings (so i don't have to dig through xml's when i want to add something)

thanks,
bamdad

Re: [solved] dock-like panel

From what I can remember off the top of my head, if you're using compositing you might want to look into Docky, which used to be part of gnome-do but split since its a pretty comprehensive dock by itself. There's also Avant Window Navigator, which is a bit more customizable, but also more error prone. If you're looking for something a bit more Win7 or something that doesn't need compositing, there's dockbarX applet for the gnome panel.

I personally prefer docky, followed by AWN, but its really your choice.

DockbarX is what you're looking for. It is very similar to the windows 7 taskbar, and it works with the gnome panel. You can find it in the AUR.

Re: [solved] dock-like panel

sorry, i forgot to mention that i'm on a thinkpad t42 with only a radeon mobility 7500, so compositing is not an option for me (redraw is awful even with xcompmgr, especially in full screen). that's why i'm looking for a simple panel, not a composited dock like awn/docky.
