kde video problem?

I am experiencing a video problem where the screen will start to show a checkerboard pattern, then it will become unresponsive. I have to <ctrl> + <alt> + <f2> and reboot to get a working desktop.

I am using kdemod 4, with the nvidia driver. I have also posted this question on the kdemod forum, but harder to get a response there, so I figured I'd post here also.

I have disabled all desktop effects within kde (would like to turn them back on at a later date). I am not experiencing this problem when i log into a regular X environment, so I am dismissing hardware issues for now (card is brand new).

Would anyone know any steps that I should do to troubleshoot my problem? Possible xorg.conf settings to resolve my video problems?

Re: kde video problem?

Strange that you have to reboot, a simple kdm restart should do it. Also, have you tried other media players such as vlc or kaffeine?
