Video image artifact after suspend

Arch on a AsRock S330 nettop with Intel 945GM video chip, when using the pm-suspend script (which otherwise works great), along with xscreensaver. When the machine is taken out of suspend, the previous screen image that was on screen immediately before suspending appears briefly for about 2 seconds before the xscreensaver lock screen kicks in. This should not happen but I have no idea where to start tracking down the problem. Any ideas appreciated.
