help help help i'm on  live kubuntu dvd right now.. i cant get into x..
before anyone asks.. I'M NOT USING ANY UN-OFFIICIAL REPOS and it didnt ask me to replace anything.. I just did a pacman -Syyu..
it asked to upgrade pacman first, I did, then i issued the previous command, and it upgraded everything, went smooth..
decided to reboot, since its a new kernel and it stops at the line with UDEV in it, then the screen goes black, and everything gets REALLY TINY..

I dont want to have to reinstall everything or go back to kubuntu if i can help it.. please someone help.. what did i do wrong?????? did i do anything wrong???? is this a normal breakage??? can it be fixed????

first, check /var/log/pacman.log and let us know what has been updated.

oh and most importantly, what's the error message you mentioned when starting X ?

it looks like your mirror is in the middle of the sync of the large package move that just happened. my guess is that your xorg version hasn't been updated whereas openssl has, that's why startx fails. you ahve different choices, downgrading, changing mirror or wait your mirrors fully syncs.

Re: I upgraded just 10min ago, <SOLVED> thanks EVERYONE

You sound like a 6 year old kid running in circles. So calm down and tell us exactly what happened. According to your log the upgrade went fine. Sot it's just that your X doesn't start anymore? That's should be a big problem. "The tiny fonts" are probably the result of udev loading the kms drivers.

But unless you provide any useful information nobody will be able to help you.

Re: I upgraded just 10min ago, <SOLVED> thanks EVERYONE

here's the mirror used during install, figure it uses this one first...
Server = ftp://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/arch/$repo/os/x86_64

any idea what mirror is most up to date??? out of these mirros, I think i can do this thru the ubuntu live cd editing pacman.conf file..
# United States
Server = ftp://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/linux/di … /os/x86_64
Server = http://mirror.umoss.org/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis … /os/x86_64
Server = http://mirrors.xmission.com/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = http://mirror.rit.edu/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = http://mirror.neotuli.net/arch/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/$repo/os/x86_64
Server = ftp://locke.suu.edu/linux/dist/archlinu … /os/x86_64
#Server = http://archlinux.unixheads.org/$repo/os/x86_64
#Server = ftp://mirror.cs.vt.edu/pub/ArchLinux/$repo/os/x86_64
#Server = http://mirrors.easynews.com/linux/archl … /os/x86_64
#Server = http://archlinux.umflint.edu/mirrors/ar … /os/x86_64
#Server = http://schlunix.org/archlinux/$repo/os/x86_64
#Server = http://mirror.archlinux.com.ve/$repo/os/x86_64

if you are right, then I should put that one FIRST or as my main....then pacman -Syyu.. and fixing one file you mentioned may fix this???
what's the most up 2 date mirror, any idea?

in order to get that startx message, id have to reboot all over again, take out the kubuntu dvd and go thru all of this again

what useful info do you need??????? please I'm desperate here, I dont want to have reinstall fresh all over again, its HOURS of work.. or install kbuntu

I wonder how that should be possible. If pacman wasn't able to download a package it should fail. The database itself was consistent as we disabled rsync during the move. So you either have one with the old or all new packages, but nothing in between.

EDIT: Now I see what happened. His mirror only had synced the core repo so far. That's why xorg-server etc. wasn't updated. Solution: Wait or use another mirror and run -Syu. (That's kind of bad luck though; no idea how to solve this)

Well, life's a bitch, isn't it. But without any additional information we can only blame Allan.....
edit: there will be an error message when you exec startx. That error message will (almost always) tell both you and us what went wrong. wink

Just calm down, it's not 2012 yet..... smile

reposting this because you guys are answering too fast. :-)

I didn't know that (some) mirrors sync the repos separately. That's indeed a problem.

After reboot.. it gets to "Waiting for UDEV to be processed...."
then the screen goes black.. gets real TINY FONTs, boots as usual..but ends at command prompt..
i put in root, then password.. then startx..
usr/bin/X: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.0.9.8: can not open shared object files no such file or directory
Giving up
xinit: no such file or directory unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process: server error

After logging in , change your mirror and  try this code

pacman -Syu

instead of starting X.
Note this has been said before and you don't seem to understand that.

Re: I upgraded just 10min ago, <SOLVED> thanks EVERYONE

it worked.. sorry for my immaturity.. should've eaten first..then delved into this.. (blame my low blood sugar for panicking over things i couldve easily thought out properly, and taken the proper steps) the pacman -Syu worked..
thansk for your help, and lack of flaming me for being an immature idiot..
now i learned one more thing.. output of var/log/pacman to diagnose errors, and how to look for what's wrong..
so one more thing learned, the HARD way.. again
thanks EVERYONE... sorry for my blatant idiocracy

just that after using Arch.. you dont EVER EVER want to go back to anything else.. specially K(u)buntu.. I enjoy having an up2date system w/o waiting for a new release in 6months..
so thanks for your patience..

You probably mean idiocy. Idiocracy would probably be a system where idiots call the shots. big_smile

I must say I'm impressed at how restrained everybody was, and willing to calm things down and really help. Good job! smile
