I managed to install archlinux with gnome with ethernet conection but want to get the wireless working.
Followed the instruction here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
when I type, ifconfig -a, no wlan0 shows up, only eth0, eth1, irda0, lo, rtap0 with details. What am I doing wrong?, assistance will be greatly appreciated for this newbie.
I am indeed impressed by the speed of archlinux so I am very interested in getting the wireless working.
thanks,

Can you post the output of
lsmod
and the output of
lspci | grep -i net
?

What does iwconfig show? Also, post the output of lspci.
You could try bringing up rtap0...

lsmod: gives me too many items (can't type them all) since don't have net connection.
lspci | grep -i net: 0202.0 Network controller: Intel Corp PRO/Wireless 2200BG (CAlexico2) Network connection (rev 05).
iwconfig: lo: no wireless, irda0: no wirless, eth0: no wirless.eth1: unassociated EESID:off/any etc... nothing about wirless.
sorry about the limited info, particularly lsmod, any particular line of interest?
thanks in advance.

I wanted to see if you actually have the modules loaded for the ipw2200. Did you load them manually? Does dmesg say anything useful about the driver?

similar problem, still no wireless after briefly connecting to ethernet and installing -fw...

with dmesg, lots of information, somelines I can summerize:
ipw2200: detected Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200 0000:02:02.0: firmware: requesting ipw2200-bss.fw
