ALSA - unable to mute Master for headphones

Edit: Ok, I just discovered this is only an issue with headphones plugged in. With my laptop's speakers, mute works correctly.
Edit 2: Aaaand now that I refine my search I see that this issue has been asked before and is apparently a known bug.  I apologize for the spam.

Like the title says. Well, actually, I can mute Master. But I still get sound. I can't figure out why... and I don't really know what else to say here.

[flint@lagann ~]$ amixer set Master toggle
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 74
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 53 [72%] [-21.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 52 [70%] [-22.00dB] [off]
[flint@lagann ~]$ amixer set Master toggle
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 74
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 53 [72%] [-21.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 52 [70%] [-22.00dB] [on]

And when I run these commands with alsamixer opened in another terminal, I can visually confirm the channel is being muted and unmuted. When I select Master in alsamixer and press 'M', it toggles. The command is working but for some reason I'm still getting sound! I should note that I can increase and decrease volume without a problem (amixer sset Master #-/+). My sound goes up and down as expected.

I'm running the latest kernel and everything, on a Thinkpad T400 with Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 3) audio controller, according to lspci.

Any ideas?

Re: ALSA - unable to mute Master for headphones

The last post here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=741470 , does it help?

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.
