Bitmap-fonts in text-mode (via directfb)

Hi Guys,

I really like using Arch in text-mode and not having to install X, GNOME, KDE etc... My personal opinion is the power of the OS is only really achievable via the command line (please don't flame me just yet!!)...

What I would ideally like to have is a full-screen text environment like I have now, but one that can use the really nice fonts which are easier on the eye, and are typically only available in a GUI system (bitmap fonts etc..)

For this to work I think I need a frame buffer and a GUI terminal app. I was thinking I'd like to use directfb as I already have this installed and configured for my boot splash (via splashy).

I don't need mouse support or sound.

My question is; what would the process be and tools I would need to achieve this?

I think there is a terminal emulator called DFBTerm, which sounds perfect? I'm wondering how do I modify my startup sequence to boot into directfb and start a full-screen terminal with a great monospaced fonts like DejaVu, BitStream Vera, or Courier New (..ok last one was a joke!)

Anyone else doing this?

Many Thanks,
Tom

Would GNU Screen be the answer to my question?
