system locking up

so lately my system has been locking up, been having to hard reset. i'm wondering if its something to do with nouveau or X, or maybe even kde4.

i've got a lot of these in my kdm.log

[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

not sure what i should be looking at. at first i thought it was bad ram. but conky shows a different amount in use every time it locks up, so i don't think thats the problem. and after looking at the log, i'm wondering about the nouveau drivers. i could switch back to the nvidia drivers i suppose, but my system doesn't feel like it has a quad core in it when running those. any suggestions on this, or is it a known bug somewhere?

Re: system locking up

We are seeing a lot of lockups lately, or is it just me noticing?
People using ath9k experiencing lockups, somebody running 32 bit apps, you, and myself as well.
I'm wondering what the cause is... I'm betting something in the kernel

Re: system locking up

i was wondering about kernel as well, i did some googling with the error code and found a post from early 2009 showing the same kind of error, the resolution was a kernel downgrade, which i can do for now, but the idea really is to move forward, not backward. either way, i'm mainly wondering if there's updates coming to resolve the issues, that's my main concern is to at least find out that yes there are known problems and they are being addressed, so i can rest easy.

Do you have ath9k?

Re: system locking up

Also interested in that one, but I'm not expecting it in this case. I believe ath9k wireless hardware is most found in laptops and most laptop users will prefer the binary nvidia driver over nouveau for power saving features above all.

Re: system locking up

thats right, its my main desktop freezing. i think my eee uses it though, or might be the ath5k module, but it also has intel graphics, and i haven't had any freezing issues with it

Re: system locking up

just thought i'd post. I haven't had a lockup since the updates i did on my system yesterday, there was a new kernel and nouveau updates.

one issue i had again though, was that it seemed the kernel was installed first, and boot image generated, and then the new nouveau build, again, so i had to boot from the live cd and rebuild the kernel image with the new nouveau module and it was fine afterwards

nvm.......it just locked up again
