Mplayer & SMPlayer video problems.

I dont even know where to begin with both these pieces of software.  I've tried AUR packages, and the ones from extra, and I'm so confused on what drivers to set, what options to pass, etc that I have no clue how to solve the problem I am now having.  Google hasn't been helpful, nor has any other searching, as I've been trying to resolve this for two weeks now.  Here are my problems:

mplayer:
executing "mplayer dvdnav://" gives me my dvd title menu (I'm using my own DVDs that I created from a TV show).  When I select one of the titles, the screen goes black, but I can hear audio.
executing "mplayer dvd://1 (or whatever number) works fine.
executing mplayer <video file (*.wmv,mov, etc)> works just fine.

smplayer:
When I start SMPlayer, my window screen is wierd- there is no background in the player window, just the movie reel icon in the middle and a menu bar (see here).
When I try to open a DVD with menus, I don't see anything in the player (just my wallpaper through the transparent window).  If I hit enter blindly selecting the first title, I still do not see any video, but can hear audi playing.  Same is true when playing any movie file (wmv, mov, etc) no video, just the transparent empty window, and audio from the file being played.

Can anyone help me try to figure this out, I hate having to install and use more than one video player to play DVDs, and another just to play media files.

I don't play DVDs with mplayer usually, but have you tried the "nocache" flag?

mplayer -nocache dvdnav://
