MacBookPro6,2 Trackpad issues.

Edit: removed keyboard issue since the cause is the non-functional trackpad interfering with key presses.

Hello all,

I recently purchased the newest macbook model (6.2) which I've install arch on, but I'm running into issues getting the trackpad to work in X.  I've attempted various configuration permutations from the wiki and some forum posts, but I'm afraid I'm unsure how to proceed at this point.

Below is the xorg log, and my xorg.conf currently only contains a device section for my video card.  If there is any additional info I can provide please let me know.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: MacBookPro6,2 Trackpad issues.

Turns out  my sporadic keyboard issue after starting X was due to my hand touching the trackpad at times.  Despite the fact that I still can't get the trackpad to work, any contact with it prevents keyboard presses from being registered.

So the keyboard issue is no longer an issue, but I'm still unable to get the trackpad to work.  My current setup has the synaptics device configured via xorg.conf using the example from the arch synaptics wiki, but the synaptics driver still fails to load with the same error:

Thanks Allan for the suggestion, I didn't know about the xorg18 repos.  However, switching to 1.8 (as described here: http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 6387.html) doesn't seem to have helped.  I pulled in the latest versions of evdev, synaptics, xorg-server, etc. from that repos, disabled hal, and restarted.  Now in addition to the failure to grab the event input, there is also an error message attempting to grab the mouse input:

I think I remember booting on a Ubuntu LiveCD where it worked. Not sure. I'm going to try anytime soon. If so, I should be able to determine what's used, and maybe, if the drivers have been modified, get them to work for Arch?

I still haven't been able to get it to work.  Luckily I primarily use my macbook with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse so I've been able to live without the trackpad, but it would be very nice to have the trackpad available when I do decide to use my macbook away from home and work.

I may give booting the just released version of Ubuntu a go to see if that works, but I probably won't get a chance until next weekend.

I can confirm that it works with Ubuntu 9.04.
I didn't have much time and could only try the trackpad, I didn't get to investigate drivers/versions.

I gave Gentoo a try - I'm having the same problem. So I looked further around - the problem doesn't seem to be X based, rather on the bcm module.
I tried a simple :

cat /dev/input/mouse0 (or whatever the trackpad device was at that time, checking /proc/bus/input/devices)

...and it returned the same "Input/ouput error" than the X log was throwing.

Looking further around, I read about some issues with the usbhid module. Some people seem to be able to resolve issues forcing the bcm5974 module to load first, I couldn't. But I can tell the usbhid module is the problem, because when the usbhid module wasn't there, I was able to use the /dev/input/mouse0 device file as expected. This is what I tried :

modprobe -r bcm5974 usbhid; modprobe bcm5974; sleep 1; cat /dev/input/mouse0

Then the terminal would print characters when using the trackpad. Yay! But couldn't get the same behavior while having the usbhid loaded. :-(

This weekend I installed Archlinux on my new Macbook Pro (2010), and I'm having the same issues described here. The most annoying is the keyboard lag due to the touchpad...

Is there any solution or patch for the touchpad? With Ubuntu I know it's working wel...

Hi, cause I also had trouble with the trackpad on the 6,2 macbook pro while installing Gentoo, I want to share my findings (needed only 2 days to figure it out wink)). The difference between the Ubuntu kernel and your kernel is most likely one USB related kernel option. Make sure you have the following enabled:

CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_ROOT_HUB_TT=y
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_TT_NEWSCHED=y

The last one is most likely missing. This is for sure a bug in the kernel, cause the combo without the new USB scheduler has to work also (and worked in older kernel versions). It is already reported here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14987

With this option turned on, the TouchPad (and the keyboard) works like a charm wink

Thanks a lot for your help!!!! After compiling the kernel with those options the touchpad and keyboard issues are finally working!!! smile

Now I only have two configure the touchpad the best as Mac OSX.

I also run Arch (64) on a Macbook Pro 5,5 and I crave to have an OSX like trackpad configurable behaviuor, did you manage to? If so, would you share your config howtos and such?

I know that the latest synaptics drivers/suite does implement and support multitouch out of the box, even if not properly like we want it it's still a great feature to have.

The only thing I don't understand is if, when and how we Linux users will have those features "out of the box". Do we need to install the suite? Or can we just use the latest drivers and configure it at will somewhere without Xorg tricks and suchs ?

Please help me understand it and, most importantly, have it!

Me too... what's it take to get the driver to build?

I just upgraded to 2.6.36 thinking it was merged in, but my clicky mouse button (which is part of my 2010 mbp touchpad) causes mouse movement to stall. (I can't click and drag.)
