Root user authentication failure?

I have a weird error that just popped up today. When I attempt to login after booting (init 3) I can't log in as root.

darkearth login: root
Login incorrect

I can log in as my user, then do a 'su -' to access root, but it would be really nice to be able to login directly as root.

Thanks in advance.

PS- I think this has something to do with PAM. I hate PAM. roll

Re: Root user authentication failure?

Maybe a simple reinstall (pacman -S) of pam would help? I had a similar problem with inability to su - I was hitting the wall until I tried that :-)

Re: Root user authentication failure?

kth5,

If it's for local logins, hash out all the lines in /etc/securetty (granted that you have CONSOLE /etc/securetty line in /etc/login.defs)
