Pale colors with KMS

I am using xf86-video-ati, and if booting with KMS, the desktop environment view shows pale, to the point that some text / buttons cannot be seen.
I don't have any vga setting to remove  on the kernel line, I also tried http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … ost8874803 (although I don't think that's exactly a brightness issue), but didn't work either. May be the same issue as http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=94991 but doesn't do the "change to green", nor does the xrandr workaround help.
