Interface doesn't support scanning network Down

When I try to run the "iwlist scanning" command I get the message "interface doesn't support scanning" on everything except wlan0 which adds network down. I am using a Belkin USB device for wireless and it detects it with "lsusb". I have everything from the core iso downloaded, and no other way to access the Internet besides my iPod touch, which I am using to type this with. Please help me

ifconfig wlan0 up, then try iwlist again.

Have you tried bring the wlan0 interface up? (ifconfig wlan0 up)
