Radeon drivers driving me crazy

Maybe someone here can help me. I have a fresh install of Arch running and I have been trying to get my Radeon 5850 working. I originally grabbed the radeonhd drivers and installed those by following the wiki. I started KDM and no luck the drivers didnt load. So next I automatically created a xorg.conf file by running Xorg -configure. I tested the config file and all I can is a blank screen. Nothing actually shows up. So after Closer inspection everything looked good except it was using mesa as the drivers. I switched that to radeonhd (shown in the wiki) and tried again, however now I get a screen can not be detected error. I am starting to wonder if the opensource drivers even support the 5850 yet.. Any ideas? Should I try proprietary or am I doing something wrong here...

Re: Radeon drivers driving me crazy

Try xf86-video-ati (driver name is just radeon in xorg.conf, no 'hd').

Re: Radeon drivers driving me crazy

Sooo I installed xf86-video-ati and restarted with no Xorg.conf and everything worked fine! Go figure... Question is will my card be fully hardware supported by using these drivers?

5xxx are "evergreen".

Short answer: No. Too much red and orange.

But what do you want to do with it?

Re: Radeon drivers driving me crazy

Well I ended up installing the catalyst drivers from the AUP because of the poor support, which was extremely efficent! Love the AUP first time user of it and pretty impressed! Everything is working great now!
